Safeway receives Health & Wellness Corporate Champion Award.

Due to amazing contributions to the Seattle region, Safeway was selected as the winner of the Health & Wellness Corporate Champion Award sponsored by the Puget Sound Business Journal and The Seattle Foundation.

To become a Healthy Community Corporate Champion, your corporation must be nominated for the good works it does, corporate giving and how corporate citizenship fits into the overall mission of the company. A panel of judges reviewed nearly 80 nominations and selected Safeway.

In Washington, Alaska and Idaho, Safeway employees get plenty of smiles from MDA campers.

During a five-week campaign, the Seattle Division of Safeway raised over $1.3 million to help MDA develop treatments and assist people coping with neuromuscular diseases. Part of these funds went to MDA summer camp, which is free to families served by MDA. Camp is a big part of what MDA provides, but only a fraction of MDA's services, which also include clinic visits, support groups, free loaner items, repairs to equipment, and research.

In July and August, over 100 of those Safeway employees visited a variety of MDA summer camps across the division. They were able to see firsthand how some of the money raised by Safeway employees is put to good use. The Safeway teams hosted carnival booths, face painting, balloon animals and even water balloon slingshots. While everyone had a great time, no one enjoyed themselves more than the kids who attend camp for the week.
