Eastern Division Meets Challenge to Be Bold, Get Cold: 70 Employees Take Polar Bear Plunge for Special Olympics

Steve Neibergall, President of Safeway's Eastern Division, led the charge as 70 employees jumped into the frigid Chesapeake Bay on January 26 to raise money for Maryland Special Olympics. The 17th Annual Polar Bear Plunge raised more than $2.2 million with Safeway employees and their supporters contributing more than $9,000 for the cause. The Safeway team had lots of enthusiasm despite sub-freezing temperatures that day. The group rented a bus, wore polar bear hats, made a team poster and were handed Safeway beach towels as they ran out of the water. Safeway also was a sponsor of the event, donating hot dogs, buns and condiments for the nearly 20,000 people who enjoyed a festival atmosphere while helping to provide funding for this great cause.
