Vons Volunteers Build Edible School Garden
in Celebration of Earth Day

Vons volunteers at ribbon cutting ceremony for edible garden

60 Vons volunteers celebrated Earth Day by rolling up their sleeves and building an edible garden at Fair Elementary. The Vons Foundation awarded a grant to LA’s BEST to fund the project and worked with the award-winning after school program to select the North Hollywood school. The garden, which includes herbs, fruits and vegetables, as well as native plants, a compost bin and pergola, will be used to teach students about plant science and the importance of proper nutrition.

After six hours of working on the garden, Vons volunteers celebrate the finished product with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Vons and Rebuilding Together Renovate House for National City Family.

On March 30, Vons employees kicked off the annual “People with Disabilities” campaign by joining Special Olympics athletes, Easter Seals clients and more than 70 Vons volunteers – including Vons President Lori Raya – in rolling up their sleeves and taking on an extensive home improvement project. The annual project, now in its third year, was funded by a $25,000 grant from The Vons Foundation to Rebuilding Together San Diego (RTSD).

Working with RTSD, Vons selected the home of Esperanza Velazco – a single mom with three children, including a 21 year old son with Muscular Dystrophy. The team of volunteers worked inside and out: removing and refinishing drywall in the front bedroom and bathroom; installing new hardware/door in front bathroom; creating a handicap accessible shower and ramp in front of house; painting the house interior and landscaping the front and backyards.

Los Angeles Mayor and Local Wounded Warrior Team Up for Bagging Boot Camp Competition

Thank you to Store 1674 Manager Lydia Veloz, Assistant Manager Randy Bastaad and the entire Studio City Vons team for helping make this event a success.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Los Angeles City Controller Wendy Gruel joined FOX11 News Reporter Phil Shuman and local veterans — former Army Airborne Ranger Aron Hijar, National Guard Company Commander, Store 1793 Manager Ken Reiley and former Air Force Airman First Class Ashley Fujimoto — for a grocery “Bagging Boot Camp” competition at Store 1674 to kick off our Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) fundraiser.

The Mayor, Controller and news reporter each teamed up with a veteran, donned Vons aprons, were assigned to a checkstand and competed against each other to see who could bag 30 Safeway private label Thanksgiving items (including a turkey) in Vons reusable bags the fastest. Serving as referees were Vons CFO Miles Kendall, Vons VP/ROM Larry Vanderdoes, Vons Director of Sales Jerry Scorsatto and Vons District Manager Tim Saller.

The Mayor and his teammate — our Wounded Warrior Vons spokesperson, former Army Airborne Ranger Aron Hijar — won the contest and were presented with a framed image of a Vons reusable bag that read “2011 Vons Grocery Bagging Boot Camp Champion.” The bagged items were donated to the three participating veterans; the participants then distributed free turkeys to 50 veterans in attendance. A $1,000 check from The Vons Foundation was also presented to the WWP.

Thank you to Store 1674 Manager Lydia Veloz, Assistant Manager Randy Bastaad and the entire Studio City Vons team for helping make this event a success.

Vons volunteers rehabilitate home of Easter Seals family.

On April 1st, Vons employees joined with Special Olympics athletes to take on an extensive home improvement project in National City. Working with Rebuilding Together San Diego, Vons identified the home of Masakazu and Michelle Jackson, whose daughter Emily is served by Easter Seals Southern California.

Volunteers painted the home inside and out, installed a new fence, replaced major appliances and cleaned up the front and back yards throughout the day-long project. This event was sponsored by a grant from The Vons Foundation and served as the kickoff for the Vons People with Disabilities checkstand fundraising campaign.
