The Safeway Foundation to Donate Millions to Find a Cure for Prostate Cancer

Beginning on June 1, Safeway stores across the country and in Canada will launch a month-long campaign to raise millions of dollars for The Safeway Foundation to support finding a cure for prostate cancer.  The Safeway Foundation will partner with the Prostate Cancer Foundation, to strategically allocate all funds.  In addition, the store program will raise awareness of prostate cancer and the importance of regular screenings.  According to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, 1 in 6 men in the United States are affected by prostate cancer.

Through the Prostate Cancer Foundation, the world’s largest philanthropic source of support for prostate cancer research, funds will be directed to support innovative research through the S.T.A.R. program and the Eminent Scholars program.

The S.T.A.R. program has brought together an interdisciplinary team of researchers from multiple prominent cancer research centers to investigate the role of targeted heat therapy to treat prostate cancer.  Scientific evidence is showing success with this treatment and on-going research is being conducted to uncover the best way to deliver heat directly to cancer cells.

The Eminent Scholars program awards young investigators, from age 25 to 35.  These young scientists have been at the epicenter of virtually every advance in prostate cancer treatment over the past 15 years and are making an enormous impact in the struggle to cure this disease.  Last year, 10 Eminent Scholars each received a three year commitment of $75,000 a year to support their research efforts.

To date, The Safeway Foundation has donated more than $28.5 million to the Prostate Cancer Foundation.
